An Unexpected Turn And Some New Arrivals ... :)

Well our lives have taken an unexpected turn ...
Over the last wee while, we’ve been keeping a careful, but distant eye on a litter of kittens born in our stable. Their mum is wild and has apparently abandoned them ...
Last night, was so cold, we became very concerned ... the kittens (4) were barely moving and two were barely breathing. Still no mum in sight ...
So, we did what we could to keep them warm overnight, with my wonderful daughter on night duty. Checking again this morning, still no mum and some very hungry, cold and weak kittens. It was time intervene. So we gathered them up, brought them inside to the kitchen and made a dash to our local vet, for advice and formula.
They’re so tiny, my heart aches for them ...
We’re now on a feeding schedule and they seem much happier ... definitely more vocal and active.
All fed and snuggled in a cosy jumper on my heating pad, I really hope they’ll be OK ... fingers crossed.
I guess we’ll have some farm cats after all ... :)

Raised Bed Garden Upgrade And Winter Crafts ...

11/10/2020

I really do love this time of year, lighting the fire for the first time, mugs of hot chocolate, autumnal colours, homemade soups and a chance to slow down ... just a bit.
Things are definitely a lot quieter in the garden and that gives me the chance to concentrate on our little homestead craft shop. My knitting needles and yarn come out and I really enjoy planning out my winter projects.
I’m slightly obsessed with chunky yarn at the moment, I love a scarf you can snuggle into and I love how quickly it knits up. So cosy ...
I’ve also been finishing up some sparkly headbands / neck warmers, the yarn is interlaced with metallic thread, which really looks so pretty. I think with the way things have been going this year, we could all use some extra sparkle in our lives.
As for outdoor projects, I’m so excited ... I’ve been wanting a tap in our raised bed garden FOREVER, years in fact and finally it’s been installed. I’m so, so grateful, I can’t tell you ... It really should make life so much easier and save so much time. I think we’re probably going to look into a drip system, to free up even more time ... if anyone has any recommendations we love to hear them.
Anyway, I’m off to pop my latest knits into our shop ... hope your having a great weekend. Stay safe, stay positive, smile ... Xxx

Our Polycrub Has Doors and Windows ... :)

4/10/2020

Autumn has definitely arrived ... So just in the nick of time, we have the outer structure of the Polycrub finish. The ends are up and the stable door is on. It was such a wonderful feeling to be able to walk through the door ... and close it behind me. I have a feeling this space will become my sanctuary, especially over the winter months. At the other end of the crub, the window is in, it just needs a latch to secure it.
But now we’ve moved onto the exciting part of planning the interior layout and scouring through many, many seed catalogues. It really does make me so happy ...
I think we’ve decided on raised beds, with a small corner for a table and a couple of chairs ... because who wouldn’t want to sit amongst their plants
On another note and because the weathers been so dreich, my daughter and I have been busy with our crafts. She’ll be listing some gorgeous needle felt Halloween hoops on her Etsy shop (HenrySays), tonight (Sunday) at 6pm ... I think the wee ghost is my favourite
Me, well I’ve been busy knitting as usual, but I’ve also made a start on stitching some Christmas cards. Trying to keep things fun, with tiny tinkling bells and googly eyes ...
Anyway, hope you’re all having a lovely weekend. I’m hoping to put up some bird boxes today ... Stay safe and sending love from our homestead ... Xxx

Finding Smiles ... :)

Well it looks like we’re heading into a second wave of Covid and it breaks my heart ...  So in an attempt to cheer myself up and find a little distraction, I headed for my craft supplies. I wanted to make something cheerful and daisies are definitely a happy little flower. One of my favourites ...
So after a few moments of unpicking and a bit of back and forth ... here it is ... my first felted / embroidered brooch. I had so much fun with it and love how it’s turned out. More importantly, I’m ending the day with a smile on my face ... :)

Please everyone, be kind and stay safe ... Xx

The Polycrub Is Covered ... :)

Yikes, we finally managed to get all of the polycarbonate sheeting over the crub. We found that it really needed a minimum of three people to locate each one, 7m lengths can be tricky ... especially if the wind blows. But ... they’re on and now we’re busy putting up the ends of the structure. It was a special moment, to be able to walk through the doorway. Big grins all round ... We’re really starting to get a feel for the space and literally can’t wait to start planting and growing. Hope you’re all having a fab weekend ... stay safe.

Polycrub Update ... And High Winds.

11/9/2020

Well ... high winds have stopped work on the Polycrub today ...
But ... nonetheless, we’re feeling so positive and happy with our progress so far. The polycarbonate sheeting is going on and the whole thing is really starting to take shape. It was a bit frustrating at first, trying to figure out how to fit them. But with a few handmade tools and a lot of patience, we got there in the end ...

Well today, was a day for dodging rain showers. But despite the weather, we made some really good progress on our Polycrub. By suppertime, we’d managed to put up all of the purlins and fix the shiplap sidings onto the hoops. Things are starting to move along quickly now ... it’s very exciting ...

The Hoops Are Up ... :)

Another exciting day, with lots of hard work ...
As always at this time of year, we’re feeling the pressure to push on, Autumn is definitely looming. There never seems to be enough hours in the day and we still have so many things we want to finish, before Winter finally arrives.
So today was all about progressing our Polycrub ... it’s great to see the hoops finally up and standing tall.
I love that these hoops are made from recycled salmon farm pipes.
Reducing waste and growing our own food ... a big thumbs up from us.
Looking forward to cracking on with it tomorrow ... fingers crossed for good weather.

Work On Our Polycrub Begins ... :)

With our greenhouse, turned into a temporary workshop for the Polycrub, I’m exited to share with you, that our next project is underway. The first job and not a fun one, was to dig 20 holes into rocky ground, to secure the Polycrub posts. Thank goodness for modern tools and Fastset Postfix, made it so much easier ...
I can’t imagine having to dig those holes by hand. Anyway, the posts are in and the Postfix is drying nicely, now we wait ...
Hope you’re all having a happy weekend ... Xx
