Happy Hens ... Reducing Our Waste.

29/7/2020

I like to reuse as much as we can at home and I’m always on the lookout for ways to be more self sufficient.
When it comes to our eggshells, I never throw them away and like to feed them back to our hens.
I leave them overnight on the warming plate of our range, to slowly bake and dry out. I’ve tried baking them in the oven, which is fine, but would always get side tracked and forget about them ... burnt eggshells smell awful. 😬
Anyway, leaving them overnight works a treat, as they’re ready to go in the morning.
Once baked (You’ll know they’re ready as they become brittle and break easily), I place the eggshells in a strong plastic bag, gently crush by hand and then roll with my rolling pin. Perfect bite size pieces of shell to add to my chicken feed or grit ponds. My girls love it and it’s a good way to supplement their calcium. Happy hens ... 🐥😃

Our Polycrub Material Arrived ...

Another truly exciting day on the homestead, as our Polycrub material arrived ... 🥰👏🎉
In true Scottish style, the heavens opened and the rain poured down. But never the less we cracked on and spent a soggy morning, moving the materials on site.
Now finally back indoors, with steaming mugs of glorious hot chocolate ... 😋
Next task is to figure out the easiest way, to dig 18 holes into rocky land for the hoops ...
I wish for once, just one job could be easy ...😅

Fitting The Door On The Greenhouse ...

Hi There ...
Sorry it’s been a while since my last greenhouse post, but the weather has not been kind to us ...
However, at last the sun is shining and we were able to crack on with it. I’m happy to say, the automatic vent has been fitted and works perfectly, all the Vistalux sheeting is on and today, we’re figuring out how to make and fit a stable door. I have a huge grin on my face ... can’t stop smiling 😁 We have so many plans for this space and are really excited for this new opportunity to grow.
We also took advantage of the good weather to release our butterflies. We’ve been studying metamorphosis with our boys and used the ‘Insect Lore Butterfly Garden’ kit. The children were mesmerised by the caterpillars transformation. It was a great learning tool and I’d highly recommend it ... five healthy, happy butterflies now off on their adventures ... 🦋

Back To Work On The Greenhouse ...

Well our last order of greenhouse material finally arrived. I’m so happy and so grateful to the delivery drivers that come out to us. Without them, none of this project would be possible right now. 🙏
Anyway, work is underway again and the sides are on. Our vent kit also arrived, so it’s time to figure out putting the Vistalux sheeting on the ends.
Lots of tricky angles ... fingers crossed.🤞
We’re so, so eager to push on and get this finished ... but we have a week of rain and thunderstorms ahead. 🥺
Guess all we can do is hope and keep everything crossed, for a break in the weather.
One silver lining to being stuck indoors, is that I get to sew. I’ve been playing around with some new card ideas and it’s been fun to finally try them out ... 😃
Anyhow, guess that’s all for now ... hope you all have a bright and happy weekend ... 👋☀️
